I’m a playwright, screenwriter, director, and teacher. I’ve also been a waitress, a cheese monger, and a celebrity blogger. I’ve worked in finance and documentary film, and I spent a year writing horoscopes (in spite of knowing nothing about astrology). I once temped for Martha Stewart (while she was in jail).
Born and raised in New York City, I’m the daughter of a public schoolteacher dad and a computer programmer mom. I tell stories that challenge assumptions of the way things are “supposed to be,” focused on women saying things they’re not supposed to, working in fields where they’re not traditionally welcome. I love doing deep research dives. I’m fascinated by how girls learn to become women.
My plays have been produced nationally and internationally. Most recently I ran Stein|Holum Projects, a laboratory for creating new performance works, with my longtime collaborator, Suli Holum. Previously, I was Co-Producing Director of the Workhaus Collective in Minneapolis, where I was a Jerome Fellow and a McKnight Advancement Grant recipient at the Playwrights’ Center. I’m an alumna of New Dramatists, the LA Playwrights’ Workshop, and the Playwrights Union. Currently based in LA, I teach playwriting at UC San Diego.
My writing has been described as “ferociously, unapologetically lyrical” by Helen Shaw, my favorite theatre critic working today!
